Spiritual Reflection – International Day of Families

Theme for 2025: Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development

"The future of humanity passes by way of the family."
    – St. John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio

    unnamed_1_.png

As we mark International Day of Families on 15 May, we are invited to reflect on the foundational role of families in building a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world.

This year’s theme — ‘Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development’ — reminds us that strong families are at the heart of strong societies.

This day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families globally. When families are supported through inclusive policies and community care, children thrive, education flourishes, and the common good of all families is strengthened and advanced.

In Catholic education, we are not only educators—we are partners with families. We walk alongside them in faith and endeavour to nurture and provide opportunities for formation. Every time we welcome a parent, support a carer, or celebrate a student’s progress, we are contributing to sustainable development rooted in human dignity.

    Let Us Pause to Reflect

How do we recognise and support the many different family structures in our school community?

    • How do we uphold Gospel values when engaging with families—especially those facing hardship or marginalisation?
    • In what ways do our practices promote well-being, equity, and long-term hope for the families we serve?

At the heart of our mission is a commitment to relationships. This is where sustainable development begins—not in grand gestures, but in the everyday moments of kindness, patience, and shared purpose.

Prayer for Families and Our Work

    Loving God,
Bless the families we serve in our school community.
May they be strengthened by love, guided by faith,
and supported in all they need to flourish.

Help us, as educators and leaders, to listen with compassion,
respond with wisdom, and act with justice.

May our work reflect Your purpose for the world -
A world where every family is valued, included, and empowered to grow.

We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord.
    Amen.

CEDoW Employee Engagement Survey: Is It Anonymous?

We’re now halfway through the 2025 CEDoW Employee Engagement Survey. Thank you to everyone who has already completed it. If you haven’t yet, there’s still time!

    2025_CEDoW_Engagement_Survey_Poster_SP.jpg

Permanent, temporary, and eligible* casual CEDoW staff have been invited to complete the survey via an initial email and periodic reminder emails directly from Xref Engage.

We have received several questions regarding the anonymity of the survey:

    Is the Engagement Survey Anonymous?

Yes, this is an anonymous survey. CEDoW cannot identify who has or has not completed the survey and cannot link responses to individuals.

For invitational surveys, Xref Engage will send out individual invitation emails to staff. Xref Engage will maintain staff anonymity such that no one at CEDoW will know who has or has not completed the survey.

In addition, personal data will not be linked to individual responses or in the final reports.

How can the survey be anonymous if demographics are asked?

    • Xref Engage will not be providing CEDoW with any raw data; only aggregated results and reports.
    • Xref Engage will only produce such reports and statistics where they have a group of five or more people to base these on. Individual responses cannot be viewed in isolation.
    • Where combinations of work areas and demographics are requested, reports are only provided where five or more respondents fit those criteria.
    • The data collected will be grouped to address key themes, for example, sorted by primary or secondary, position, and length of service. Analysis will only be undertaken for groups with five or more responses. Individual responses cannot be viewed in isolation and will NOT be associated with specific individuals.

This is your opportunity to provide open, honest feedback about your experience at work. Whether things are going well or there are areas where we can do better, your input helps paint a clear picture of what it is like to be part of the CEDoW community.

The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete and will remain open for three (3) weeks, closing on Friday 23 May 2025.

No one knows our schools and offices better than you. Your Voice Matters—thank you for being part of this important process.

For more information, check out the 2025 CEDoW Engagement Survey FAQs. If you still have any questions, please contact Rochelle Borg or Susan Phillipson, Workplace Safety and Wellbeing Team at whs@dow.catholic.edu.au.

Professional Standards for Middle Leaders – MyPaD

For: Principals, School Leaders, Middle Leaders and Teachers

    Links: https://www.aitsl.edu.au/standards

    https://www.aitsl.edu.au/lead-develop/teachers-who-lead/middle-leadership-standards

The AITSL Professional Standards for Middle Leaders are now available for staff to access for their Performance and Development Plan (PDP) on MyPaD.  It is encouraged that teachers and middle leaders consult the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) and the Middle Leader Standards (MLS) when formulating their (PDP) goal(s) for the year.

Teaching staff (excluding Principals) are required to have selected at least one or two standard descriptors from the relevant APST career stage. Selection is based upon the individual's professional responsibilities and their identified areas for growth and development.

Middle Leaders are likely to find the Highly Accomplished or Lead descriptor standards most applicable to their planning for goal setting. Please note that these descriptors may be utilised for PDP purposes irrespective of formal accreditation by NESA at that level.

Additionally, the Middle Leader Standards serve as a valuable and excellent resource for delineating the scope of required developmental capabilities and should also be considered when setting leadership goal/s in conjunction with one or more standard descriptors from the APST.

The MLS are also an excellent resource for leadership teams to utilise in alignment with APST to clarify and support the importance of the Middle Leader role in driving school improvement. Middle Leaders may choose to focus on an area from the MLS when designing community goals for collaborative teams.

If you have any questions or would like support, please contact Anna Jones: Team Leader, Leadership and Professional Growth at annalouise.jones@dow.catholic.edu.au.

Sound Scouts – Hear for Your Future

    unnamed_1_.png

Being able to support a student after identifying the underlying issue is making a huge difference. Understanding the reason behind a child's learning difficulty has been of paramount importance to see them start to thrive and connect with their learning.

The Hidden Cycle Between Hearing, Reading and Mental Health

World-first research from Australian Catholic University’s Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy has found that children with hearing difficulties are more likely to experience both reading challenges and mental health issues.

The study, led by Dr Andrea Salins, analysed data from more than 15,000 children aged five to eleven across Australia, the UK, and the US. It showed that children with reported ear and hearing difficulties not only had lower reading skills but also higher rates of anxiety, attention issues, peer problems, and behavioural difficulties. Read more about the research: Hearing difficulties linked to reading-related mental health issues.

Hearing is fundamental to both emotional and academic growth, and when issues go unnoticed, children may struggle in silence. Early screening, including after the newborn check, is critical to identify mild or acquired hearing loss that can surface in the school years.

Sound Scouts makes it easy to proactively support students’ wellbeing by identifying potential hearing challenges with the Sound Scouts app. Term 2 is a great time to start testing as children have settled into the school year.

As undiagnosed hearing issues can impact both learning and socialising, the sooner issues are identified and treated, or managed, the better. Self-esteem can be easily damaged but not so easily repaired.

With a shocking one in six children experiencing mental health issues (National Children’s Mental Health & Wellbeing Strategy), a 7-minute hearing check is one simple way to make a difference.

Venue: St Paul’s Catholic Parish Primary School, Albion Park (School Hall), 247-251 Tongarra Road, Albion Park. Parking is available in the parish carpark or on Tongarra Road).

Learning Intention: This professional learning will deepen participants' understanding of evidence-based practices that create dialogic, language rich classrooms, fostering authentic vocabulary acquisition and oral language development. The focus will be on explicit instruction of Tier 2 and 3 vocabulary, using quality literature to support the programming and planning of English in their school context.

In response to your feedback, Day 2 will shift its focus to the application of content and pedagogical knowledge to support English programming and planning at your school. Building on this, we will place a strong emphasis on strategies that support oral language and vocabulary development. The day will be hands-on and practical, offering participants the opportunity to analyse existing planning and programming through the lens of language development.

We will explore how oral language and communication skills can be intentionally and effectively addressed alongside other focus areas by embedding structured opportunities that foster student engagement, encourage authentic communication, and increase the desire to express ideas. Participants will work with mentor texts, explore a variety of classroom strategies, and contextualise a unit of work to ensure oral language and vocabulary development is seamlessly integrated into everyday learning.

We request that all participants select one sequence of learning/unit of work that will be taught in Weeks 5-10 of Term 2. This could be a unit you are teaching or a unit of work from the stage/grade you are leading that will be taught in the second half of this term. Please also bring a hard copy of the mentor text.
