Spiritual Reflection – St Joseph the Worker

    screenshot_2025_04_29_at_4.26.19_pm.png

St Joseph, a model of humble service and steadfast love, teaches us the sacred dignity of work. In the quiet rhythm of his daily labour, Joseph reveals that our efforts—no matter how simple or unseen—are a participation in God's creative mission. He did not seek praise or recognition, but served faithfully, providing for Mary and Jesus with strength, skill, and love.

As we reflect on St Joseph the Worker, we are reminded that work is more than a task—it is a vocation. Whether it is teaching, leading, building, caring, or creating, our work becomes holy when done with integrity and offered for the good of others.

Joseph’s example challenges us to approach our work with purpose and presence. He listened deeply to God’s voice, trusted in divine guidance, and acted with courage in times of uncertainty. Through his life, we see that holiness can be found in the steady, faithful response to our everyday responsibilities.

In a world that often measures success by status or productivity, St Joseph invites us to embrace the quiet strength of service, the beauty of simplicity, and the transformative power of trust in God.

In Patris Corde, Pope Francis reflects that “each of us can discover in Joseph – the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence – an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble. Saint Joseph reminds us that those who appear hidden or in the shadows can play an incomparable role in the history of salvation”.

It is in these quiet shadows—in that sacred space of trust, humility, and faith—that we most deeply encounter Joseph. From his silent strength, we draw inspiration to embrace our own work with grace, purpose, and a servant heart, bringing to fulfilment God’s plan for humanity through us.

In the Spirit of St Joseph

    • How do I recognise the sacredness of my work and stay grounded in purpose, presence, and service?
    • How does my work contribute to the flourishing of others and support the wider mission of our school communities?

Message from the Acting Director of Schools

    Tim_Gilmour_HIGH_RES.jpg

    Dear Colleagues,

Welcome back to Term 2, 2025.

I hope the break offered you a valuable chance to rest, connect with loved ones, and reflect on the Easter message. Our Director of Schools, Peter Hill, is currently undertaking a period of renewal leave overseas until 23 May and we wish him well for this formative experience.

As a Catholic community, we continue to deeply feel the passing of Pope Francis as we mourn the loss of a true servant of God, while giving thanks for all he did for our world, and rejoicing that he is now enjoying his eternal reward with Jesus, Mary, and the saints. During his funeral Mass on Saturday, Pope Francis was recognised as a leader who was, like Jesus, out amongst his people with an ‘open heart to everyone’.

Despite the sadness we feel, we should be deeply encouraged by Francis’ constant message to continue looking forward with anticipation to what God will accomplish with us and through us, particularly in this Jubilee Year of Hope. With this as inspiration, I am pleased to share with you the progress we are making as we work together to realise the mission of the Church through our Catholic schools.

We're progressing Lighting The Way, our strategic plan centred on the concept of Connected Autonomy. Ultimately, it's about empowering your school to lead improvement based on your unique context and helping all of us to achieve student faith, learning, and wellbeing outcomes more effectively and sustainably than we could on our own, as one united community of schools.

Our main CEO objectives this year are designed to make Connected Autonomy real and meaningful:

    1. Making data useful: We're refining data systems so they are genuinely user-friendly and provide valuable insights to support school and student improvement.
    2. More relevant support: We're re-imagining how schools access support from the CEO or other schools. This means resources going where they’re needed most, and ensuring professional learning is practical, relevant to school goals, and directly applicable to your work in faith, learning, and wellbeing.
    3. Ensuring thriving schools: By focusing on enrolment growth and workforce planning, we're working to ensure all our schools remain vibrant, well-resourced places with the staff needed to serve our communities now and into the future.
View the CEO’s Term 1 Report Card

Of course, everything the CEO team does should ultimately support your work in schools. The upcoming 2025 CEDoW Employee Engagement Survey is a direct way to share feedback on how each of our schools, the CEO, and the system as a whole can keep improving. Please be frank and fearless—your insights genuinely shape our priorities and help us understand what you need.

Thank you for your professionalism, your passion for the faith, learning and wellbeing of students, and the hopeful spirit you bring to our Catholic school communities every day. Your work is foundational to our Catholic mission in action.

    Tim Gilmour
    Acting Director of Schools

2025 CEDoW Employee Engagement Survey – Launching Next Week

    2025_CEDoW_Engagement_Survey_Poster_SP.jpg

CEDoW’s 2025 Employee Engagement Survey is your opportunity to provide open, honest feedback about your experience at work.

Whether things are going well or there are areas where we can do better, your input helps paint a clear picture of what it is like to be part of the CEDoW community.

The survey is designed to help us understand:

    • What is working well in our schools and offices
    • Where there are opportunities for growth and improvement
    • How can we better support you to thrive in your role.

We are committed to creating a workplace where every staff member feels valued, supported, and empowered to do their best work. That starts by listening to the people who know our schools and workplaces best.

The 2025 CEDoW Employee Engagement Survey has been developed in collaboration with Xref Engage, specialists in the development of research and evidence-based employee surveys. All responses go directly to Xref Engage for analysis and are anonymous and completely confidential.

Permanent, temporary, and eligible* casual CEDoW staff will be invited to complete the survey via an email invite directly from Xref Engage on Monday 5 May 2025 at 8 am. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete and will remain open for three (3) weeks, closing on Friday 23 May 2025.

The feedback you provide will directly inform future initiatives, priorities, and strategies in your school/service area and across CEDoW. No one knows our schools and offices better than you. Your voice matters—thank you for being part of this important process.

For more information, check out the 2025 CEDoW Engagement Survey FAQ’s. If you still have any questions, please contact Rochelle Borg or Susan Phillipson, Workplace Safety and Wellbeing Team at whs@dow.catholic.edu.au.

Resources to Celebrate a Millennial Saint

    Resources_to_Celebrate_a_Millennial_Saint.png

Did you know that Carlo Acutis, the inspiring teenager who used his computer skills to share his faith, will be officially canonised as a saint in 2025? The original date of 27 April has been postponed following the death of Pope Francis.

To mark this special celebration, CEDoW has developed digital resources that embrace Carlo's tech-savvy spirit and his passion for evangelisation. Created using apps and AI, these resources are perfect for exploring Carlo's life with your students:

    • For primary students: An interactive digital school magazine. Access the magazine via Publuu here.
    • For secondary students: A thought-provoking podcast and discussion guide. Access the guide via Publuu here.

These resources, inspired by Carlo's own use of technology to spread faith, demonstrate how to engage with and share faith in the digital age and can be explored for learning activities across Religious Education, English, ICLT, HSIE, Music and Art, and Civics and Citizenship.

The CEDoW resources for Carlo Acutis can be accessed here.

Make your vote count this weekend

Before you cast your vote this Saturday, it’s important you know where the political parties stand when it comes to Catholic education. While both Labor and the Coalition support Catholic schools and our priorities, that’s not true of all candidates running in this election.

To help you understand the views of the major parties, the National Catholic Education Commission has prepared this helpful scorecard.

The Faith, Learning and Wellbeing Framework

    Audience: All Staff
    For immediate action

At the Education Mass on 25 February 2025, the Faith, Learning and Wellbeing Framework was launched. A companion document to ‘The Core Work of Teaching’, the framework is an operating model for how to deliver continuous Catholic school improvement in our schools.

The main features of the framework are:

    • The identification of the five ‘Essential Elements’ - Agency, Environment, Equity, Relevance and Rigour - needed to deliver high quality outcomes for all students
    • A set of shared commitments that underpin each Essential Element
    • Identification of the research-based High Impact Strategies needed to deliver the Essential Elements.

The document has been designed to support leadership teams and school and office staff in goal-setting, planning, professional learning, teaching practice, assessment and reporting.

A hard-copy version for every member of staff in every school (teachers and support staff) is being delivered to schools this week. Additional copies are also included in each delivery which can be provided to casual staff. Also included in the delivery is a set of A2 display posters.

Please familiarise yourself with the framework and make it a key document in your work together supporting students to grow in their faith, learning and wellbeing.

If schools require further copies of the Faith, Learning and Wellbeing Framework, please contact Talia Raschilla at raschillac02@dow.catholic.edu.au.

Staff Flu Vaccination Reimbursement Program 2025

    unnamed_1_.png

As part of CEDoW’s ongoing commitment to health and safety, the Staff Flu Vaccination Reimbursement Program will run again in 2025.

All staff will need to source their own vaccinations and then submit the receipt to whs@dow.catholic.edu.au for reimbursement.

How Do You Receive Reimbursement from CEDoW for Your Flu Shot?

CEDoW will reimburse up to $30.00 for your vaccination only. CEDoW’s reimbursement does NOT cover medical expenses incurred for the administration of the vaccination or for visiting the doctor.

To receive the reimbursement, follow the steps below:

    1. Claim the Medicare component (if applicable)
    2. Scan or take a photo of your vaccination receipt and send a copy to whs@dow.catholic.edu.au
    3. Provide your name, employee number, and school/office in the email, and make sure the cost of the vaccination is visible.

    What Is the Flu?

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus. While it can occur year-round, flu activity typically peaks during the winter months.

How Can the Flu Be Prevented?

The most effective way to protect yourself from the flu is by getting a flu vaccination. In addition to safeguarding your health, vaccination helps protect others, particularly those who are more vulnerable. A higher rate of vaccination in the community reduces the likelihood of the flu spreading.

CEDoW encourages all staff to consider getting vaccinated to help maintain a healthy workplace and school community.

If you have any questions regarding the resources, please contact Workplace Safety and Wellbeing on whs@dow.catholic.edu.au.

For CEDoW’s full range of workplace, safety and wellbeing resources, please visit the Workplace Safety and Wellbeing Hub on Gateway.

Workplace Gender Equality Committee – Seeking Members

The organisation's Workplace Gender Equality Committee is seeking new members to join us in our important work of fostering gender equality, inclusion, and diversity across our CEDoW workplaces.

We will be holding a planning day soon to shape our focus for 2025 and beyond. This will be a great opportunity to contribute your voice and ideas to help guide our future direction.

Some of the key topics we’ll be exploring include:

    • Updating our Sexual Harassment Policy in line with recent legislative changes
    • Improving communication and understanding around flexible working arrangements
    • Considering the Gender Pay Gap in light of new guidance from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency

If you’re passionate about these areas and would like to be involved, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact Sharon Anderson at andersons04@dow.catholic.edu.au to express your interest.

The planning day is scheduled for Wednesday 7 May 2025, and ongoing committee meetings are held once per term for two hours, either in person at the Catholic Education Office or via Zoom.

We look forward to welcoming new members and working together to make a meaningful impact.

    Natasha O'Donoghue
Assistant Director - People and Culture

Reminder: Booking of Casual Teachers and School Support Officers

All bookings of casual teachers and school support officers should occur via the Tap For Teacher system. This system is the source of truth for managing an active list of approved casual candidates and contains important information about the roles that each casual candidate is approved to perform (e.g., teacher, administration, SSO classroom).

Upon engaging a new casual candidate, it is important to remember that the person booking the new casual should review the file on the Tap for Teacher system to ensure the casual candidate has the necessary approval. This should be verified by reviewing the casual approval letter within Tap For Teacher and the person’s identification upon arrival.

If a candidate cannot be found on Tap For Teacher it is likely that they are not approved for casual work.

Over the past few years, the Recruitment Team has prioritised approving additional casual teachers to ensure there is an appropriately sized pool of candidates available and this continues to be a priority.

Please contact your Recruitment Officer if you have any concerns in relation to accessing the casual list. If you would like some support or training on the Tap For Teacher system, please contact Yvonne Sweet via sweety01@dow.catholic.edu.au.

    • Students are accessing outcomes below the stage level of their cohort in most focus areas/strands within a KLA.

Note: The use of an off-level report must be a collaborative decision made between the school and parents/carers of the student. For further information on Off-Level Reporting, see here.

Schools are to complete the Reporting Adjustment Spreadsheet for off-level reports by Monday 5 May 2025.

So, You’ve Watched Adolescence... Where to Turn for Advice

    unnamed_1_.jpg

For any parent who has watched the Netflix drama Adolescence and was left highly disturbed by the harmful impact that social media is having on young men and boys, you are not alone.

It’s hard to think of a show that has captured the world’s attention so fully and shone a much-needed light on the dangerous impact of misogynistic content, algorithms and influencers on the minds of young men and boys.

Shockingly, despite our best efforts as parents to raise great kids, it is not a fair fight when tech companies and algorithms can influence our teenagers within seconds.

As Australia’s national online safety educator, nothing is more important to us than ensuring young people are safe to create, connect and explore the wonders of technology and the internet.

It’s what motivates us in every aspect of our work, whether we’re connecting with educators, parents and young people to develop digital literacy and resilience resources, encouraging the tech industry to take a Safety by Design approach by putting safety at the forefront of the design, or developing guidance to prevent under 16-year-olds from having accounts on certain social media services.

    Professional Learning

Save the Date: CEDoW NCCD Cross School Moderation

Attention: School Leaders of Diverse Learning and Pastoral Care and NCCD Teams K-12

To support accountabilities relating to NCCD, an online cross school moderation opportunity has been scheduled.

Focus: Imputed Substantial/Extensive or SOCIAL and EMOTIONAL.

    Date: Monday 12 May 2025
Option One: 9:30 - 11:30 am via Zoom
Option Two: 1:00 - 3:00 pm via Zoom
Please note that these sessions are being offered instead of usual network meetings.

    Why moderation is important?

When moderating school-based decisions for the NCCD, teachers engage in professional dialogue about students’ level of adjustment and category of disability to make decisions that are consistent, reliable and defensible. Professional dialogue is characterised by interactions that are collegial (eg value the input of all), respectful (eg resolve differences in a professional manner) and draw on evidence (eg, informed by data to support decision-making).

    Prior to attending this event:

    • ONE de-identified student Personalised Plan per participant must be submitted
    • Please consider the FOCUS provided above when considering the PP being submitted
    • De-identified PPs for moderation are to be included here by 8 May 2025
    • Please upload each plan individually and label with the school name and a number per plan (eg, St Nicholas #1, St Nicholas #2)
    • Please submit one plan per person who will attend the moderation session.

Leaders of Diverse Learning will have received more information regarding the focus LOA/Category of Disability and timeframes for providing this information in readiness for moderation.

The following link will provide access to the NCCD Moderation Resource for schools. School NCCD Teams are encouraged to review this in readiness for school based moderation.

    gateway_image_updated_.jpg

The Staff Spiritual Formation team would like to inform you of an upcoming personal formation opportunity which is being offered to School Support Officers and CEO Administration Staff.

The retreat is entitled “Another Cup of Our Life” and seeks to provide staff with an opportunity to slow down and reflect on different aspects of their lives. Please note that staff are not required to have attended the previous Cup of Our Life Retreat and that for those who have, it will be a unique experience from the last.

We will explore some ways to ensure that our cups are replenished and how our loving God longs to walk with us in all that we face. The day will include personal reflection, interactive discussions and meditation. All staff attending the retreat are asked to bring a cup that holds significance for them as this symbol will be central to the day.

“Another Cup of Our Life” is a one day retreat and will be held in the beautiful grounds of The Hermitage in Mittagong on Tuesday 24 or Wednesday 25 June 2025 (Term 3, Week 9). We are offering it twice to provide schools with the opportunity to send staff on different days if necessary. All meals, facilitation and venue expenses will be covered by the CEO. Schools are required to cover the cost for release. Registration is through LMS by Friday 6 June 2025.

Due to the nature of this retreat numbers are limited so we would encourage interested staff to register as soon as possible. All of the details regarding the retreat are on the flyer here.

    Programming Guidelines

The CEDoW K-6 Programming Guidelines are clearly aligned with NESA curriculum requirements and apply to all KLAs. The guidelines support staff with the intention of building a shared understanding of system expectations in educational programming which have been streamlined in order to support the core work of teachers in building quality teaching and learning programs.

NESA’s Curriculum - school registration requirements fact sheet provides further guidance on curriculum documentation and record-keeping for school registration purposes, clarifying common questions raised. While programs should be comprehensive, they do not need to be fully scripted and should reflect typical teaching practices. The amount of depth and detail included in a teaching program is a matter for the teacher.

    WriteOn Competition

    unnamed_2_.png

The annual WriteOn competition provides an exciting opportunity for schools, teachers, and students to engage with writing. Through participation, students develop their ability to express ideas creatively and may even become published authors. Open to students in Years 1 to 6, the competition invites students to craft an imaginative text of up to 500 words based on a provided stimulus.

Students are to use the stimulus quote below to create an imaginative text of up to 500 words: “Could they be changing?”

Additional teaching and learning resources, aligned to the English K-10 Syllabus, are available to support teachers and students. The competition closes on Friday 20 June 2025.
