World Environment Day 2025: Beating Plastic Pollution

    screenshot_2025_06_03_at_5.03.13_pm.png

As we celebrate World Environment Day, we are reminded of our responsibility to protect and preserve the world that God has entrusted to us. This year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” calls us to confront a growing crisis that threatens not only the environment but also the well-being of future generations. As educators, we are invited to reflect deeply on how we can contribute to the restoration of God's creation in our everyday lives and in our communities.

The plastic pollution that has infiltrated our oceans, landscapes, and even our bodies is a stark reminder of the consequences of our consumption. It challenges us to consider the fragility of the earth and the impact of our actions on the natural world. Pope Francis, in Laudato Si', called us to a profound ecological conversion, urging us to “hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” (LS 49). This cry is echoed in the plight of animals, ecosystems, and communities burdened by the waste we produce.

In Laudato Si', Pope Francis spoke of the “throwaway culture” that has led to an unjust and unsustainable relationship with creation. This culture is particularly evident in our use of plastic, a material that, while convenient, often ends up as waste that harms the environment for generations to come. Yet, in the face of this crisis, there is hope. By taking small but significant steps, we can make a difference. Our actions—whether reducing plastic consumption in our schools, encouraging recycling, or supporting sustainable practices—can be a powerful witness to our faith and commitment to caring for God’s creation.

As we reflect on how we might “beat plastic pollution,” we are called to examine our role as stewards of creation. This invitation is not just about reducing our ecological footprint; it is about fostering a culture of care and reverence for the earth in the hearts and minds of our students. By incorporating lessons on sustainability, teaching about the effects of plastic pollution, and modelling responsible consumption, we can inspire the next generation to live more harmoniously with the world around them.

Our faith provides us with a rich tradition of care for creation. In the Book of Genesis, we read that God created human beings to live meaningfully and to take care of the world. This vocation to steward the earth is not a burden but a blessing—a sacred responsibility that we must pass on to our children. In this context, caring for the earth and fighting plastic pollution becomes not just an environmental issue but a deeply spiritual one.

As we reflect on our role in caring for the environment, let us pray for the wisdom and courage to be true stewards of creation, committed to “beating plastic pollution” for the sake of the earth and future generations. May we be inspired by the beauty of God's creation and strive to protect it with all our hearts.

    gateway_image_updated_.jpg

The Staff Spiritual Formation team would like to inform you of an upcoming personal formation opportunity which is being offered to School Support Officers and CEO Administration Staff.

The retreat is entitled “Another Cup of Our Life” and seeks to provide staff with an opportunity to slow down and reflect on different aspects of their lives. Please note that staff are not required to have attended the previous Cup of Our Life Retreat and that for those who have, it will be a unique experience from the last.

We will explore some ways to ensure that our cups are replenished and how our loving God longs to walk with us in all that we face. The day will include personal reflection, interactive discussions and meditation. All staff attending the retreat are asked to bring a cup that holds significance for them as this symbol will be central to the day.

“Another Cup of Our Life” is a one day retreat and will be held in the beautiful grounds of The Hermitage in Mittagong on Tuesday 24 or Wednesday 25 June 2025 (Term 3, Week 9). We are offering it twice to provide schools with the opportunity to send staff on different days if necessary. All meals, facilitation and venue expenses will be covered by the CEO. Schools are required to cover the cost for release. Registration is through LMS by Friday 6 June 2025.

Due to the nature of this retreat numbers are limited so we would encourage interested staff to register as soon as possible. All of the details regarding the retreat are on the flyer here.

Key Learnings from K–6 Mathematics System Professional Learning – Day 2

On Monday 26 May 2025, 36 educators from 20 CEDoW primary schools gathered for the second day of professional learning focused on enhancing Mathematics instruction. The theme, ‘Effective Pedagogical Practices in the Mathematics Classroom,’ guided a day of rich learning and collaboration.

    Highlights included:

    • Connecting the Faith, Learning and Wellbeing Framework and the Mathematics Syllabus: Educators explored the relationship between the essential elements in the Faith, Learning and Wellbeing Framework and the aim and rationale of the NSW Mathematics Syllabus, reinforcing the way in which the elements enliven the intent of the syllabus.

    • Assessment for Learning: Katherine Maish led a session on NESA’s Principles of Assessment, highlighting the emphasis on formative assessment and its role in effective instruction.

    • Deepening Content Knowledge: Dr. Christine Mae guided participants through the learning progression of fractions and equality from Early Stage 1 to Stage 3, using a modelled Stage 3 lesson to demonstrate conceptual understanding in action.

    • Analysing Pedagogy: Educators examined the teaching strategies used in the modelled lesson, focusing on intentional planning and high-impact practices.

    • Collaborative Planning: The day concluded with networking sessions where participants shared actionable strategies to bring their learning back to their school communities.

This professional learning day empowered educators with practical tools and deeper insights to support high-quality Mathematics instruction across K–6 classrooms.

Repeated: NESA K-6 Professional Learning for Syllabus Implementation

unnamed_8_.pngNESA has released five new online professional learning courses to support teachers and school leaders in familiarising themselves with the new CHIPS syllabuses, for their implementation from 2026 and 2027.

The five professional learning courses include:

    • Primary Curriculum Overview (1 hour)*
    • Creative Arts K-6 (1 hour)
    • HSIE K-6 (1 hour)
    • PDHPE K-6 (1 hour)
    • Science and Technology K-6 (1 hour)

The Primary Curriculum Overview course explores:

    • The structure and evidence base of the K–6 syllabuses
    • The importance of vocabulary and language development
    • NESA’s Statement of Equity Principles, capabilities and priorities.

*This course must be completed first to unlock the four additional subject-specific courses, which can then be completed in any order.

The Creative Arts K–6, HSIE K–6, PDHPE K–6 and Science and Technology K–6 courses explore:

    • Key syllabus features, their intent and the evidence base behind them
    • The rationale, aim and structure of each syllabus
    • How content is organised and connected across learning areas
    • Where to find guidance and support on the NSW Curriculum website.

Each course contributes 1 hour of professional development. These professional learning courses are available now via the NESA Learning Catalogue and then accessed in NESA Learning.

    Important

To support the phased implementation of the new syllabuses, schools are strongly advised to engage with these courses as part of their professional learning plan.

    Schools may choose to:

    • Complete the Primary Curriculum Overview, PDHPE K-6 and Science and Technology K-6 courses during Semester 2 2025, in readiness for implementation in 2026 (total 3 hours online professional learning).
    • Complete the Creative Arts K-6 and HSIE K-6 courses during Semester 2 2026, in preparation for implementation in 2027 (total 3 hours online professional learning).

This approach aligns with the CEDoW CHPS implementation plan, which prioritises the implementation of PDHPE and Science and Technology from 2026.

    Syllabus Implementation

    Additional Support From CEDoW

To complement the NESA courses, syllabus teaching advice and additional syllabus support materials, CEDoW will release supplementary resources in Semester 2, 2025, developed by PDHPE and Science and Technology working parties, including:

    • Sample K-6 scope and sequence
    • Sample units of work
    • Additional support materials.

Support in professional learning, in addition to that provided by NESA, will be available to schools. Resources to support the implementation of K-6 Creative Arts and K-6 HSIE syllabuses will be developed and shared throughout 2026.

For further information, please contact learningk-12support@dow.catholic.edu.au.
